P6 Scheduling tip for USACE projects

We recently got a call from a contractor in need of urgent scheduling assistance for an Army Corps of Engineers project. Their current scheduler, while suitably skilled with P6, hadn’t had any experience working on USACE projects. Among the schedule reviewer’s comments was one that’s easily avoidable that we see from time to time. For all significant submittals, two not one separate Activites are required:
– Submit XYZ (Activity coded to RESP ‘PRIM’), with an Original Duration of 1 day
– Review & Approve XYZ (Acitvity coded to RESP ‘GOVT’), with an OD per the Specs, typically 30 calendar days

This simple protocol does a couple useful things. First and foremost, the Corps requires the 2 separate Activities so the RESP code is assigned to the correct entity. Second, a 1-day OD enables the scheduler to place the Activity anywhere in the schedule by selecting an appropriate Predecessor. Sometimes the simplest ideas are the best. Happy Scheduling !
